- Immediate Unpacking: While aluminum does not rust like Corten steel, we recommend unpacking your delivery immediately to prevent condensation from becoming trapped against the surface. This ensures the finish remains pristine and free from water-spotting or heat-marking during initial storage.
- Optimal Drainage: Aluminum is naturally waterproof, but healthy plants and long-term finish stability require proper airflow. Ensure your planter is positioned for clear drainage and is free from standing water to maintain the integrity of both the vessel and your plant’s root system.
- Substrate Selection: To ensure the longest possible lifespan for your planter, use high-quality, free-draining soil. While aluminum is highly resistant to moisture, avoiding water-logged fillers helps prevent mineral buildup and maintains the interior finish.
- Coastal Performance: Unlike Corten steel, our aluminum planters are highly recommended for coastal environments. Their natural oxide layer provides a superior barrier against salt-air corrosion, making them the ideal choice for gardens and balconies within 1km of the shoreline.
- Surface Protection: One of the primary benefits of aluminum is that it is non-bleeding. There is no messy rust runoff like that associated with Corten steel, meaning you can safely place these planters on porous stone, porcelain, or light-colored paving immediately without risk of staining.
- Structural Integrity: To maintain your warranty, please ensure no unauthorized drilling or grinding is performed on the unit. Our workshop can accommodate custom drainage holes or modifications during the fabrication stage to ensure your planter arrives ready for use.
What is powder-coated aluminium?
Powder-coated aluminium is aluminium that has been coated with a dry, fine powder and then heated in an oven until the powder melts and forms a smooth, even finish. The result is a tough, long-lasting coating that is resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and corrosion — making it one of the best finishes available for outdoor use.
Why choose aluminium over Corten steel?
Both materials have their strengths — it depends on the look and environment you're working with.
What colours are available?
Our powder-coated aluminium products are available in the following RAL colours:
- RAL 9005 — Jet Black: A deep, neutral black. Timeless and versatile. Works in both classic and contemporary designs. Sleek and sophisticated.
- RAL 9010 — Pure White: A bright, clean white. Fresh and modern. Ideal for minimalist or Scandinavian-style gardens. Enhances natural light.
- RAL 7016 — Anthracite Grey: A deep, sophisticated grey with a subtle blue undertone. Modern and versatile. Complements a wide range of architectural styles.
How thick is the aluminium?
All of our aluminium products are fabricated from 3mm thick aluminium. This gives them excellent structural strength and durability, meaning they won't bend, dent, or deform under normal use or weather conditions.
Will aluminium rust?
No. Unlike steel, aluminium does not rust. It naturally forms a thin, invisible oxide layer that protects the metal underneath from corrosion. Combined with our powder coating, this makes it extremely well suited to long-term outdoor use in any climate — including coastal environments.
Is aluminium suitable for use near the coast?
Yes. This is one of the key advantages of aluminium over Corten steel. Aluminium is fully resistant to salt air and moisture, making it the ideal choice for gardens within 1km of the coastline or in exposed coastal locations. If you're based near the coast and considering Corten steel, we'd recommend switching to one of our aluminium alternatives.
How heavy are aluminium planters compared to Corten steel?
Aluminium is significantly lighter than steel. This makes our aluminium planters much easier to move and reposition, which is especially useful for larger planters or if you like to rearrange your garden seasonally. Some of our aluminium planters are also available with wheels for even easier repositioning.
Does the powder coating chip or wear off over time?
Powder coating is one of the most durable finishes available. It is far more resistant to chipping, scratching, and fading than traditional paint. Under normal outdoor conditions, it will maintain its colour and finish for many years without any treatment.
That said, if the coating is ever damaged — for example from a hard knock — the aluminium underneath will still not rust. It simply won't look as uniform in that area.
How do I maintain powder-coated aluminium?
Very simply. Just wipe it down with a damp cloth if it gets dirty. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the powder coating over time. A mild soap and water solution is all you need for a thorough clean.
Can I paint over the powder coating?
We would not recommend it. Powder coating is specifically designed to be a long-lasting, protective finish. Painting over it can peel, flake, and ultimately look worse than the original finish. If you need a different colour, please contact us — we may be able to fabricate a replacement in your preferred RAL colour.
Can aluminium be cut or modified?
We advise against cutting or modifying aluminium products yourself, as this can affect the structural integrity and the powder coating finish, and may void your warranty. If you need a custom size or shape, please contact us directly — our Dublin workshop fabricates bespoke aluminium products to order.
Do you offer custom aluminium products beyond planters?
Yes. Anything we make in Corten steel can also be fabricated in powder-coated aluminium. This includes planters, edging, letterboxes, privacy screens, and more. If you have a specific project in mind, get in touch and we can discuss options and provide a quote.
How long will aluminium products last?
Our aluminium products are built to last decades. Aluminium itself does not corrode or degrade, and the powder coating provides an additional layer of protection. All of our products come with a 25-year guarantee.
Can I use aluminium planters indoors as well as outdoors?
Yes. Unlike Corten steel, which needs outdoor exposure to develop its patina, aluminium planters work perfectly well in both indoor and outdoor settings. Just be mindful of drainage — make sure there is adequate drainage or a saucer underneath if you're using them indoors.
How does aluminium compare in price to Corten steel?
Aluminium planters are generally priced higher than their Corten steel equivalents. This reflects the cost of the material and the powder-coating process. However, the long-term value is comparable — both materials are designed to last 25+ years with minimal maintenance.
