  • Thickness is 2mm
  • Double edge safety folded
  • Spikes and connectors included and come pre-welded
  • 300cm lengths available on request
  • Immediate Breathing: To ensure a flawless and uniform patina, please unpack your delivery immediately. This prevents trapped moisture from creating irregular markings and allows the steel to begin its natural weathering process evenly.
  • Coastal Considerations: Due to high salt-air concentrations, we do not recommend Corten steel installations within 1km of the coastline. (For coastal projects, please contact us regarding our Powder Coated Aluminum alternatives).
  • The Patina Phase: During the initial weathering stage, natural runoff may occur. We advise protecting porous or light-colored surfaces until the protective oxide layer has fully stabilized.
  • Structural Integrity: To maintain your warranty, please ensure no unauthorized drilling or grinding is performed on the unit. Our workshop can accommodate custom modifications during the fabrication stage.
  • Annual Maintenance: Keep clean by rinsing away debris with standard tap water once a year.

What is Corten Steel?

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a type of steel that develops a stable rust-like appearance over time. Instead of corroding and deteriorating like ordinary steel, the rust layer actually forms a protective barrier that shields the metal beneath from further corrosion. This is why it requires virtually no maintenance and lasts for decades.

Why does Corten steel rust, and is that normal?

Yes — the rust is the whole point. When Corten steel is first exposed to moisture and oxygen, it begins to oxidise and form a layer of iron oxide on the surface. Over time, this oxide layer becomes dense and stable, effectively sealing the steel underneath and preventing further weathering. The result is a rich, warm patina that deepens and improves with age.

How long does it take to develop the patina?

The timeline varies depending on your local climate, but generally:

  • Weeks 1–2: Light surface rust begins to appear
  • Month 1: An orange-brown colour starts to develop
  • Months 2–3: The patina becomes more pronounced and uniform
  • Months 3–6: The rust layer stabilises and deepens
  • Year 1+: A fully mature, rich patina with no further visible change

Ireland's wet climate actually works in your favour here — moisture accelerates the weathering process, so you'll typically see results within 2–3 months.

Will the rust damage or stain my paving, decking, or patio?

During the initial weathering stage (roughly the first 2–3 months), natural runoff can occur as the oxide layer forms. This can leave marks on light-coloured or porous surfaces like concrete, sandstone, or timber decking.

To avoid this, we recommend:

  • Protecting surrounding surfaces with a sheet or barrier during the first few months
  • Positioning Corten pieces on darker or sealed surfaces where possible
  • Rinsing the area gently with water if any staining occurs early on

Once the patina has fully stabilised, runoff stops entirely.

Is Corten steel safe to use outdoors year-round in Ireland?

Yes. Corten steel is specifically designed to withstand prolonged exposure to moisture, rain, and fluctuating temperatures. It is one of the most weather-resistant materials available for outdoor use and is regularly specified by architects and landscape designers for exactly this reason.

Can I use Corten steel near the coast?

We do not recommend installing Corten steel products within 1km of the coastline. High concentrations of salt air can interfere with the natural weathering process and lead to accelerated, uneven corrosion over time.

If you're working on a coastal project, please contact us. We offer powder-coated aluminium alternatives that are fully suited to marine environments.

How long will Corten steel last?

All of our products come with a 25-year guarantee. In practice, properly installed Corten steel can last significantly longer than that. The protective oxide layer continues to strengthen over time, making it one of the most durable outdoor materials available.

Does Corten steel require painting or sealing?

No. Corten steel is designed to be left untreated. Painting or sealing it will actually prevent the natural weathering process from occurring and defeat the purpose of the material.

If you want to stabilise the rust at a particular stage — for example, to fix the colour or reduce flaking — you can apply a product like Owatrol Oil, which penetrates the rust and locks it in place without altering the appearance. This is optional and a matter of personal preference.

What maintenance does Corten steel need?

Very little. Once the patina has stabilised, simply rinse the surface with clean water once a year to remove any dirt or debris. No painting, treating, or replacing is required.

Can I cut or drill Corten steel myself?

We advise against drilling or grinding Corten steel products yourself, as this can compromise the structural integrity and void your warranty. If you need a custom size or modification, please contact us directly — our Dublin workshop can accommodate bespoke fabrication during the manufacturing stage.

What happens if I leave Corten steel indoors or covered?

Corten steel needs regular exposure to moisture and air to develop its patina. If it is kept indoors or in a sheltered, dry environment for an extended period, the weathering process will stall or become uneven. For best results, install your Corten steel outdoors where it will be naturally exposed to the elements.

Is Corten steel the same as regular rust?

No. Ordinary rust is a sign of steel breaking down and deteriorating. The patina on Corten steel is fundamentally different — it is a dense, stable oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. Think of it as armour rather than damage
